More Movie News: Batman, Uncharted

•December 3, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Hey Guys! Sorry for the lack of updates, been up to my knees in… well, you get the picture. But anyway, 2 bits of interesting news today (I promise for more updates/news soon!) from the Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, and our beloved thief/treasure hunter, Nathan Drake in Uncharted the movie.

Rumor has it that Christopher Nolan (director of Batman Begins & The Dark Knight) will be using previously unused footage of Heath Ledger from The Dark Knight as a guest appearance in the sequel, The Dark Knight Rises. That has now been debunked. He will not be using any footage of Heath, which I think is good, because he killed as the Joker and let him rest in peace. Heath, til this day, I’ve never seen a better acting performance than what you did as the Joker. Nolan did give us a lil info though, that Tom Hardy (Inception) will be in the movie and will play a key role. As to who or what, good or bad, Nolan did not say. Judging by his pics, who could he be? Mad hatter? Nolan said no Riddler, but could that be misdirection? Killer Croc before he goes…killer? Penguin? Doubt it. As a good guy, I think he looks too old to be any of Batman’s allies. Or maybe he could just another politician somehow helping out Batman, like the new DA or something. Let the speculation begin!

Now onto Uncharted news… it looks like more bad news as the Director, David Russel, is changing Drake’s (the hero) story all together! Why mess up something that was perfect the way it is? We love Drake, although he can be considered a thief, a treasure hunter that kills people, you know he’s still a good person inside. Its his personality that makes him lovable. A cop?! cmon, thats freakin stupid.

While the Uncharted games depict Nathan Drake as a Indiana Jones/Mal Reynolds-style treasure hunter and adventurer, Russell’s movie will recast him and his hitherto unseen family as some kind of antiquities police. “This idea really turns me on that there’s a family that’s a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities,” he said. “[A family] that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice.”

The changes dont necessarily mean the movie will suck, but it wont do any fan service. To me, thats totally wrong. Why even use the “Uncharted” name. Its pretty obvious its to attract the fans. The story of the Uncharted videogame was never bad, so why change it? Its reported that Russel is already halfway done with the script and that its going remarkably quickly. Umm… Maybe because your script sucks? I now have NO… ZERO… NIL… expectations for this film. But who knows, maybe it will surprise me like GIJoe. GIJoe was surprisingly entertaining haha!

DLCs: Good or Bad?

•November 29, 2010 • Leave a Comment

DLC, or downloadable content, is a route a lot of games take these days. They use these updates in order to tweak gameplay, add features, add characters, costumes, levels etc… whatever the developer wants. But are these doing more harm than good in the gaming industry??

This is something you can definitely look at from both sides of the same coin. One may say that it adds to the gameplay such as creating new maps to play online or additional characters to use to extend gameplay. While others may say its a marketing ploy, a way to milk out additional revenue for the developers by adding features, characters, maps etc… that should have already been there in the first place. Sorry guys, but I go with the latter. Sure sure, its nice to have unexpected DLC’s far down the line that make you want to play the game again, but developers who PLAN to have DLC’s, for me, is just a poor excuse to release an incomplete game early and make people pay extra for a complete one.

Yes, there are games such as Fallout that create brand new scenarios, as if its a brand new game or story line, thats fine and dandy. But games such as Street Fighter where you have to pay for additional characters (only a few I may add) and costumes?! Cmon Capcom, they should have been there from the start! Street Fighter isnt something new, its old and tested, you know it deserves the entire character list. But nope, Capcom chargers $8 for a character or two and some costumes. If that isnt an extra way to make money, I dno what is. Call me a cheapskate, but DLC’s should be free. Yes, they do require money to create, but hey, we bought your game, why only give us an incomplete one? If you want us to spend, then give us another game or at least something worth it! Rockstar’s got the idea, releasing the undead pack for Red Dead Redemption, for only $6 I may add. This added a brand new storyline, brand new gameplay, and it doesnt feel just tacked on. Anyway, all I’m getting at is, what happened to those days wherein games just came out and thats that? You went home, played it til you were bored, and waited for the next iteration. Now its just all about wondering if there will be a DLC to an incomplete game. How about this, developers should just save their time and money and put it to creating their next game.

Finally, My White iPhone 4!

Ah, my white iPhone 4 has finally arrived. Well, not really, since its just a cosmetics change, or you can say, plastic surgery (or in this case, glass) from my previous black iPhone 4. But nonetheless, this white one is definitely growing on me.

I must admit, being the OC kinda guy I am, especially with my gadgets, I was disappointed at first. I noticed all the little things that were off, which is why Steve Jobs probably decided to just cancel it all together (as rumors go). I dont know if I’m just extra OC or if others have encountered the problem where theres a tiny space between the rear panel and the aluminum frame. I researched and found some black units had this defect, but way worse than mine. It still does bother me from time to time, but less now. With the white glass, it also creates kind of a grey shadow by the border also takes some getting used to. Another thing I’m worried about is screen. The original screen was scratch resistant (I didnt even put a screen protector on my black one), but I’m not completely sure about this one. Not that there are any scratches and it was said that these white cases come directly from the Apple manufacturer, but you can never really know right? And Steve was right when he said the home button didnt exactly match the white glass.

But fret not dear readers, I have definitely grown to love this device. My brother, my girlfriend, my friends, everywhere I turn, everyone has the black iPhone 4, and after seeing them together, the white one is still unmatched. With the little flaws here and there (which i probably notice WAY more than most people), its still worth it. You hear people around you asking one another, “where’d he get that? Thats the white iPhone! the white one is so nice!” Not to mention how many heads it turns. It may seem that my complaints about the white iPhone outweigh the good, but I’m really just nitpicking. The white iPhone 4 is a gorgeous device and I recommend anyone who has been wanting, waiting, for the mythical white iPhone to be released by Apple, to get theirs done. If you have a few hundred bucks to spend and dare to have your precious iPhone 4 be taken apart, go for it!

Can’t Wait! Thats all I gotta say! DC, good. Green Lantern, good. Ryan Reynolds, good.

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Opening in 3D and 2D theaters on June 17, the action adventure stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins, Mark Strong, Taika Waititi, Temuera Morrison, Angela Bassett, Jay O. Sanders and Jon Tenney.

Uncharted Movie to Star Mark Wahlberg?!

•November 27, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Oh man oh man, I have a baaaaad feeling about this. When I heard about the news, I had to put my few journalistic skills and find out if it was true. Low and behold, Mark Wahlberg actually confirmed it, as well saying hes trying to get Robert De Niro & Joe Pesci involved, playing as his dad and uncle respectively. Hold up, in the game, there was never any mention of Nathan Drake’s (the hero) dad or uncle.

First thing that comes to mind is, isnt Mark Wahlberg kinda old to play our loving smart-ass hero Nathan Drake? Nathan Drake is a young, comedic hero, quick on his feet and with his mouth, slender, and to me, seemed kinda tall. Think a personality like Johnny Storm (Human Torch) in the Fantastic 4 films. And altering the story to include characters that were never mentioned? Especially with a game as popular as Uncharted, whose spawned an even better sequel? Not good, not good. Haven’t we learned our lesson with Resident Evil? Personally, I disliked those films. Why deviate so much from a good source material? But who knows, could it be a tie in to Uncharted 3, set to be released sometime in 2011? The only saving grace I’ve heard is that at least theres a good director on helm, David Russel, (who’s films seem to be generating quite a bit of buzz, though personally, I havent seen any) and that Naughty Dog (studio behind Uncharted) is supervising the project. Naughty Dog puts a lot of polish and tlc into its games, and they started off as a small studio, so I’m sure they will take care of their baby.

Uncharted the movie is set to start filming this summer, so its most likely going to see a 2012 summer release date. Be sure to check back here for the latest updates and trailers!

Manila Auto Salon 2010 (SMX)

The 2010 Manila Auto Salon is done and over, it was fun while it lasted. I must admit I was less impressed by the cars this time around, but the crowd has definitely grown and title of biggest and best auto show in the Phils still belongs to these organizers. It was loud and crazy, with media all over the place, booth babes and their tiny outfits, exhibitors checking out what others are bringing to the table, it was a great environment for all car enthusiasts. It was awesome to be part of the show, bringing in my car, driving it into the building, all the hype and preparation, hearing compliments from random people, and even the exit, I’ll never forget it. But I gotta say, nothing will ever beat the 2008 show (HABREC FTW!)!
